Kingsmead Quarry - Cemex - the land owners ethical and environmental position?

I sent the following letter dated 12/7/2011 to Cemex:

For the personal attention of:

Mr. J Gonzalez, Cemex UK Operations

Cemex House, Coldharbour Lane

Thorpe, Egham

Surrey TW20 8TD

Dear Sir

Slurry operations at Kingsmead Quarry, Welley Road, Horton

I do feel that you ought to be aware of matters that may well contravene your company’s environmental and/or ethical policies.

It would appear that many tanker loads of slurry were stored in unauthorised lagoons at your Kingsmead Quarry site over a long period of time.

I did contact your Mr Glyn Richards in June who was polite and helpful, but did not seem particularly interested in the problem because the land is leased out.

Since then it appears that the Environment Agency is assessing whether there are grounds for prosecution concerning unauthorised importation and storage of waste on the land, which may then reflect badly on Cemex as the landowners.

I have not yet discovered precisely what the material was, but I await a response from the Environment Agency.

Please feel free to contact me for further details or a site visit.

Yours faithfully

Ewan Larcombe
