Environment Agency fined £7,500 for pollution

The Environment Agency has been prosecuted for the first time after it polluted a river which it was in charge of protecting.

A city angler brought the agency to court in a landmark case over the killing of hundreds of young salmon, trout and other fish.

'This incident should never have happened ' said Judge Jeremy Griggs

After pleading guilty, the Environment Agency was fined £7,500 at Exeter Crown Court and ordered to pay £1,466 costs.

The subcontractor, May Gurney, from Norwich was fined £27,500 and £1,466 costs.
