Thames Weir improvements
(but what about Thames dredging? please see Jubilee river story)
e-mail from Mark Plowman - Environment Agency
As the owner and operator of the River Thames weirs, we are responsible for keeping them in good working order and making them safe for our staff to operate and maintain. As such, we are planning to carry out essential maintenance work on a number of River Thames weirs in early to mid 2012.
By grouping together a number of weirs for repair, we can deliver this work whilst making significant savings on the contractual and logistical costs. The work to the weirs is therefore being planned and delivered across South East and West Areas as a single package.
We have already briefed the appropriate constituency MPs, the Local Authority Chief Executives and will be contacting a number of residents in the local communities. A version of those briefings is attached for your information.
We have started our dialogue with the public early so that we may get the benefit of their thoughts and opinions to help us make the best improvements possible. We will also be encouraging participation in our e-consultation, which will be available on our website throughout November.
You can find information on the work to the weirs and the consultation on our Weir Improvement webpage: www.environment-agency.gov.uk/thamesweirimprovements.
Please share this email and briefing with any colleague who would benefit from awareness and who may be in regular contact with members of the public. Please do not hesitate to contact me on the details below should you wish to discuss this in more detail.
