THE last days of the Morpeth Flood Victims
Appeal have come to an end with a farewell
party for local heroes.
Flood champions Jim and Rhona Dunn were at
the heart of the community effort to provide
practical, emotional and financial support
for residents throughout the disaster and
its aftermath.
And to mark the end of their work they held
a party for fellow volunteers.
Assisted by their daughter Lesley, the
couple organised a buffet for
representatives from Morpeth Churches
Together, Lions and Rotary groups and the
British Red Cross.
Mrs Dunn said later: "It was lovely for us
all to be together as it was the prompt
collective action of all the groups we
represent and the generosity of the public
that enabled us to ease the conditions of
Morpeth's flood victims."
Former Rotary President Brian Gott said:
"Thank you, Jim and Rhona, for your
wonderful hospitality, but above all for all
you have done to ease the plight of everyone
directly affected by the floods."
The appeal raised more than £208,000, while
hundreds of household items and furniture
pieces were collected and handed out to
families in need.
The last cheque from the fund has now been
issued and all that remains is the auditing
of the accounts by the British Red Cross.
However, the volunteers have vowed to stay
in touch with their comrades, and a party
has already been organised by Morpeth Lions
Club President Les Brindley to celebrate the
end of his year in office in August
