FLOODING: Be prepared with flood fairs

Householders threatened with increasing incidents of freak weather can follow the boy scouts motto of being prepared by attending a series of flood fairs.
Recent years have seen homes across the borough hit by deluges and flash floods and a series of workshops next month will give residents the chance to prepare for the worst by learning practical ways of minimising damage to property and how to stay safe.
The royal borough has teamed up with the Environment Agency, the National Flood Forum, Thames Valley Police and the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue service to showcase a range of flood protection ideas, products and services and to provide help and information for people affected by or at risk of flooding.
* A major flood fair will be held at Thames Valley
Athletics Centre on Wednesday October 8 from noon to 9pm.
* Mini flood fairs will also be held in Wraysbury Village
Hall on Monday October 13 from 2pm to 8pm and Pinder Hall,
Cookham, on Wednesday October 15 from 2pm to 8pm.
Cllr Colin Rayner, lead member for highways, transport
and environment, urged people to attend the Flood Fairs,
which are being held as part of Thames Valley Flood
Awareness Month.
He said: "We now seem to be experiencing more flooding than
I can ever remember, in particular flash floods.
"As householders we are all responsible for doing everything
we can to protect our homes. The flood fairs are a great way
of keeping up to date with what's available to buy, as well
as providing lots of advice and information to help minimise
flood risk in the future."
