Thanks for all the info. The one thing I picked up straight away from Peter Quarmby's reply was that although their replacement (?) staff will be trained, they will not have any experience and this is one of our main issues. Training is no replacement for experience. There is also no mention of how long this training will take. Having noticed that the EA has recruitment notices up in some locks for jobs that have already become available, I doubt that this training will extend to more than a day or two. No doubt that the lock keepers they are replacing/filling in for, have had many many years of experience. This just doesn't seem a safe option to me and I doubt to anyone else either.
