COUNCIL LOOKS TO TAKE LEGAL ACTION OVER FLOODS

17:56 - 22 November 2007

Hull City Council this afternoon confirmed it is considering legal action against Yorkshire Water over the floods in the city.

As first reported on the Mail's website earlier today, the authority is to seek advice on whether it can mount a case against the utility company.

City council leader Carl Minns said: "After discussions with the leader of the main opposition group on the council and in the light of all the information we now have available about the causes of the floods, I have instructed that we obtain the best legal advice on whether recovering the council's costs is possible."

The council has estimated the floods will cost it around £100m.

Earlier this week, Yorkshire Water's maintenance record at its pumping stations in Hull was heavily criticised in the final report by a review body set up to examine the causes of the floods.
