Datchet Election – October 4th 2007 – 7am to 10pm

Increased probability of flooding!

Since the Environment Agency took over from the National Rivers Authority the probability of flooding in Datchet has increased.  Thames dredging for flood defence purposes has been abandoned and their £110m Jubilee River flood scheme has proven to be sub-standard in design and construction and is still unable to carry its design capacity.

The Environment Agency now has the ability to divert Thames water onto defenceless villages at the touch of a button, and their new flood plain maps adequately demonstrate the risk and extent of potential flooding to the community.

As Chairman of your Parish Council, I objected most strongly to the MWEFAS * proposals at the 1992 Public Inquiry.  The scheme was approved in 1995, but since the 2003 flood event the ‘1992 experts’ have proved to be wrong.  Sub-standard design and ‘optimistic’ hydraulic models have resulted in a £2.75m out-of-court settlement with the designers, a sum that does not even cover repair costs to date.

I believe that this village is not properly served by the Environment Agency.  We pay their wages.  We are their customers.  Their actions (and in-actions) have significantly affected both property values and insurance costs (premiums and excess) in perpetuity.  Their extravagant scheme almost led to catastrophe in 2003, and has had a detrimental impact on the quality of life in this village ever since.

I will continue campaigning to get the Environment Agency to carry out their responsibilities for flood defence maintenance (particularly Thames dredging for flood defence purposes) and also the fair and equitable operation of the Jubilee River.
